Why You Must Always Have Goals: The Power of Knowing Your Destination
Why is it important to always have goals? The simple answer is: goals are like destinations. Imagine two people starting a journey. Each of them will be rewarded upon reaching their final destination. The first person knows exactly where he’s headed—he just needs to figure out how to get there and what he needs along the way. The second person, however, has no idea where his destination is. The result is obvious: the first one eventually arrives. The second? He’s still wandering, unsure of where to go—even to this day.
Over the years, we’ve glorified terms like motivation, discipline, and consistency. But here’s something most people don’t realize: even the lost person might have all of those qualities. He pays his rent every month, fills his gas tank, and takes the trash out every night. That requires discipline. He does it consistently. And he’s motivated enough to keep his life in order. Yet—he’s still lost.
Why? Because he doesn’t know where he’s going.
You see, having a goal gives your life direction. It gets you out of the maze. It gives meaning to your actions. Without a goal, you’re just moving—but not progressing.
Goals are not just tasks to check off. They are missions that shape your future. When you have a list of clear goals, your life becomes a series of meaningful missions—one after the other—pulling you forward with purpose. And that never really ends. Because as long as you’re alive, there’s always another version of you waiting to be unlocked.
Once you identify your list of goals, maybe for this year or the coming five years, write them down and out them where you can see them in a daily basis. Stick them to your wall, put them in your desk, a written goals are more powerful because your mind will focus on them, one day they will start to manifest.
So ask yourself: Do you know where you’re going?
